Hans Scharler's laid back and improvisational approach to comedy are deceiving as he can be outrageous, offensive, and completely sarcastic. The results are a unique performance mixed with distorted observations, subtlety, uncomfortable moments, and uproars of laughter.

How did you get your start as a comedian? My dad had a comedy record collection. After a few spins, I fell in love with Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, and Steve Martin. I knew right then that I wanted to do what these guys did. I started writing comedy bits, making up stories, and trying out jokes on my friends and family. My first big laugh was about a disappearing bottle of paste. About 20 miles away from my parent's house, there was a theater that had a monthly Open Stage night. As soon as I got my first car, I drove over and watched the poets and musicians. A slot opened up on a visit and I volunteered. I improvised a poem to fit in as a regular. Over the next few times after that, I told stories and tried jokes. I was hooked.
What was your first gig? My first gig where someone introduced me as a comedian was in New York City. I was paid $5 to be one of eight comedians on the stage. I remember noticing a dead cockroach in the green room and sarcastically thinking that I was in show business. My act received a few laughs and mostly blank stares, but afterwards I was sure that I wanted to give it another go.
What is your most memorable moment? Moments are fleeting, but they seem to hang around you for the rest of time. Once I was performing with Demetrius Parker as the comedy duo Slim and Whitey. The lights hit my face as we came up on stage together. I forgot everything I was going to say. I stared into the audience for what seemed like an eternity. Watching the video later of the performance later, it was not even noticeable. In my mind, time had stopped.
What is your reason for doing comedy? I love comedy. I love laughing and having absurd thoughts. I don't fit into many social and real-life situations, but I am totally comfortable in front of people and telling stories. I hope along the way that others also enjoy what I do and find something they equally enjoy. |
